When Brain Training Works, It Can Help Millions of Lives and Improve the Quality of Life of the World's Aging Population

New scientific evidence shows how CogniFit solutions are both effective and useful, and why few brain and neuroscientific solutions work.

A new study published in Neuropsychology Review extensively analyzed the characteristics of commercially available brain training programs and critically examined empirical evidence of these programs to see if they did, in fact, promote brain health and help their users. The authors of this first systematic review ranked the CogniFit brain training solutions with the highest level of empirical evidence of efficacy in helping to improve cognition and cognitive abilities.

The reviewers of the study - Enhancing Cognitive Functioning in Healthy Older Adults: a Systematic Review of the Clinical Significance of Commercially Available Computerized Cognitive Training in Preventing Cognitive Decline - concluded that, “current evidence supports that at least some commercially available computerized brain training products can assist in promoting healthy brain aging.”

Over the past half-decade, we've seen a proliferation of brain games or brain training apps with little or no evidence backing up their claims to improve brain function. Unfortunately, this situation has generated conflicting statements on whether or not brain training works, leading to confusion among health professionals and subsequently in the average consumer. I welcome this long overdue review which shows how CogniFit can truly benefit individuals and confirms that CogniFit brain fitness solutions have a great deal of evidence of efficacy.

The authors searched for human clinical trials related to commercially available brain training programs in academic literature. After retrieving close to 8,000 studies, the reviewers identified 18 cognitive programs, 11 of which had no clinical trials or empirical evidence for review. Among the remaining 7 brain training programs, only CogniFit and one other company possessed the highest level of evidence showing concrete effects of brain training in healthy aging.

“Over the past half-decade, we’ve seen a proliferation of brain games or brain training apps with little or no evidence backing up their claims to improve brain function. Unfortunately, this situation has generated conflicting statements on whether or not brain training works, leading to confusion among health professionals and subsequently in the average consumer.” said CogniFit CEO, Tommy Sagroun. “I welcome this long overdue review which shows how CogniFit can truly benefit individuals and confirms that CogniFit brain fitness solutions have a great deal of evidence of efficacy.”

Reviewers said that CogniFit brain training applications “showed improved working memory and executive functions in healthy older adults.” They also referred to a study using the CogniFit program “for cognitive remediation on gait performance reported improved processing speed in the sedentary elderly. As attention and executive functions are associated with slow gait and falls in the elderly; this study showed that the benefits of cognitive training can be transferred to untrained domain of mobility.” This is a remarkable finding as one of the biggest point of debate for the brain fitness industry has been to know whether the cognitive improvements made during brain training can be replicated in daily life.

The authors also noted that CogniFit brain fitness solutions and cognitive assessments “have been used on individuals with multiple sclerosis, dyslexia and other disorders showing improved cognition.” In addition, CogniFit brain training “has also been reported to enhance memory, attention, executive functions and processing speed in chronic insomnia patients.” showing how CogniFit solutions can be used for a large number of health, fitness and mental health needs.
